A Funny Coincidence? Or The Gift Of Foresight?
A new fitness craze has swept through the country’s young people over the last few years. Have you heard of obstacle course competitions like Tough Mudder, Spartan Race and American Ninja Warrior? In sharp contrast to traditional races, these competitors participate by doing things like trudging through mud and leaping over walls.
While many see them as a recent phenomenon, these nontraditional competitions are not the first of their kind. When we pioneered internet sampling 15 years ago, many said we were ahead of our time. This was proven recently, and quite hilariously, in Maine.
Back in 1992, a most unusual world championship sporting competition was created in Finland, in which men carried their wives over their shoulders while completing obstacle courses. We covered this strange event back in the 2000, as part of a short lived radio advertising campaign to drive visitors to our site.
Now, the “sport” has found its way to the United States, where, over Columbus Day weekend, the Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship was held, complete with log hurdles and muddy pits. When I heard the news headline about it on the radio a few weeks back, I nearly drove off the road laughing.
Coincidence? I think not.
Just more proof of how internet sampling has always been driving towards the future!
Here the radio advertisement from back in 2000 that I mentioned earlier in the post. Enjoy!
